NEW ORLEANS — The Phunny Phorty Phellows had their annual streetcar ride Wednesday night to kick off the start of the 2010 Carnival season.
It was the first time since before Hurricane Katrina that the Phellows rode the St. Charles Avenue route.
Fate determines whom the Phellows select as their Queen and “Boss,” the krewe’s equivalent of a king: they pass around two king cakes with babies inside, and whoever gets them becomes royalty.
The Phellows were revived in 1981 after they ceased parading in 1898. Their parades focus on topical themes and satire.
